Beyond Chaos

About This Puzzle

• Café Terrace at Night (Place du Forum), Vincent van Gogh —

Step into a glowing evening in southern France with Vincent van Gogh’s Café Terrace at Night, one of the artist’s most beloved masterpieces. Painted in September 1888 in Arles, France, the scene captures a warmly illuminated café terrace opening onto a cobblestone street beneath a brilliant star-filled sky

This image is a delight for puzzle enthusiasts. Rich golden yellows from the café lantern contrast dramatically with deep blues and violets of the night sky, while intricate cobblestones, scattered café tables, and architectural details create a rewarding challenge piece by piece. The painting draws the eye from the inviting terrace into the winding street beyond, where tiny figures stroll under Van Gogh’s sparkling stars.

• Historical Background

Van Gogh painted this scene directly on location at night in the Place du Forum in Arles, setting up his easel outdoors rather than working from sketches. He was fascinated by the challenge of depicting nighttime without relying on black paint, instead using layers of blue, violet, green, yellow, and orange.

• Today, the original painting is housed in the Kröller-Müller Museum in Otterlo, Netherlands.
• Van Gogh’s Personal Connection

A particularly charming anecdote comes from Van Gogh’s own letters. Writing to his sister, he described the café’s “huge yellow lantern” lighting the terrace and cobblestones, and expressed how much he enjoyed painting outdoors at night. He proudly referred to the work as “a painting of night without black,” celebrating the vivid colors he saw after dark.
