About This Puzzle
- The Church at Auvers (1890) – Vincent van Gogh
Experience one of Vincent van Gogh's most powerful and expressive masterpieces with The Church at Auvers, painted in June 1890 in Auvers-sur-Oise, France, during the final weeks of the artist's life. This striking depiction of the Église Notre-Dame-de-l'Assomption transforms a familiar village church into a dramatic vision of colour, movement, and emotion. Today, the original painting resides in the Musée d'Orsay in Paris.
Bathed in vivid blues, luminous greens, and warm golden tones, the church appears almost alive beneath a swirling cobalt sky. Winding pathways curve around the building, while energetic brushstrokes create a sense of motion and vitality throughout the scene. The combination of intricate architectural details, vibrant colours, and flowing textures makes this artwork an exceptionally rewarding jigsaw puzzle for collectors and art lovers alike.
- Painted During Van Gogh's Final Creative Burst
After leaving the asylum at Saint-Rémy, Van Gogh settled in Auvers-sur-Oise under the care of Dr. Paul Gachet. In the little more than two months between his arrival and his death, he produced around seventy paintings and numerous drawings, making this one of the most prolific periods of his career. The Church at Auvers is among the most famous works from this remarkable final chapter.
- A Personal Story Behind the Painting
In a letter to his sister Wilhelmina, Van Gogh described the painting's colours in detail, noting the violet church set against a "simple deep blue" sky, with ultramarine windows and touches of orange on the roof. He compared the work to studies he had created years earlier in Nuenen, revealing how memories of his Dutch homeland continued to inspire him.
The church also held personal significance. Earlier in life, Van Gogh had hoped to become a preacher and worked as an evangelist in Belgium before turning fully to art. Years later, churches still appeared frequently in his paintings, often carrying deep symbolic meaning.
The church depicted in the painting still stands in Auvers-sur-Oise today. Just weeks after completing this work, Van Gogh died in the village at age 37. His grave, beside that of his brother Theo, is located in Auvers-sur-Oise not far from the church itself.
