About This Puzzle

• Irises (1889) by Vincent van Gogh –

Lose yourself in a vibrant sea of colour with Vincent van Gogh's Irises, one of the most celebrated floral paintings in art history. Created in May 1889 at the Saint-Paul-de-Mausole asylum in Saint-Rémy-de-Provence, France, this masterpiece transforms a simple garden scene into a dazzling display of movement, colour, and life.

The painting bursts with rich blue-violet irises, sweeping green leaves, and warm orange-red earth, all rendered in Van Gogh's unmistakable energetic brushwork. A single white iris stands out among the blue blooms, creating a fascinating focal point that puzzle enthusiasts will enjoy discovering as the image comes together piece by piece. The flowing lines, intricate floral details, and bold colour contrasts make this an especially rewarding and visually engaging puzzle.

• A Painting Born in Saint-Rémy

Van Gogh painted Irises shortly after voluntarily entering the asylum at Saint-Rémy in southern France in 1889. Restricted largely to the hospital grounds, he found inspiration in the enclosed gardens surrounding the institution. The flowers depicted here grew within those gardens and became one of his earliest subjects during his stay.

• A Personal Story Behind the Artwork

Far from being merely decorative, Irises reflects a pivotal period in Van Gogh's life. Following a series of psychological crises, the artist turned to painting as a source of stability and comfort. In letters to his brother Theo, Van Gogh mentioned working on "violet irises" from the garden and expressed hope that creative work would help restore his strength. He believed that painting could aid his recovery and provide solace during difficult times.

Interestingly, Van Gogh himself regarded Irises as a study rather than a masterpiece. Yet today it is considered one of his greatest achievements and is admired worldwide for its vitality and expressive beauty. The original painting is now housed in the J. Paul Getty Museum in Los Angeles, California.
