- Painted in Arles During a Creative Peak
Van Gogh painted this scene on the banks of the Rhône, just a short walk from the famous Yellow House where he was living at the time. The work formed part of a series of night paintings created during one of the most productive periods of his career in Arles. Today, the original painting is housed in the Musée d'Orsay in Paris.
- A Personal Story Behind the Painting
The night sky fascinated Van Gogh. Before creating this work, he wrote to his brother Theo that he longed to paint a starry sky, a subject that had become an obsession for him. He often expressed the belief that night possessed colours richer and more vibrant than daylight.
In a letter describing the finished painting, Van Gogh carefully noted the colours he observed: an aquamarine sky, royal blue water, yellow gaslights, and golden reflections stretching across the river. He even included a sketch of the composition in correspondence with his friend Eugène Boch.
The painting also reflects a memorable experience Van Gogh described from a nighttime walk, writing:"It was not cheerful, it was not sad – it was beautiful." That sense of wonder and tranquility remains at the heart of this remarkable artwork.
