• About Gustav Klimt

Gustav Klimt (1862-1918) was a leading figure of the Vienna Secession, an artistic movement that sought to break from traditional academic art and embrace innovation and modernity. While Klimt is best known for his iconic portraits and gilded masterpieces such as The Kiss, he was also a passionate landscape painter.

During the summer months, Klimt often retreated from Vienna to the peaceful shores of Lake Attersee in Austria. There he found inspiration in nature, creating a series of remarkable landscape paintings that captured villages, gardens, forests, and lakes through a tapestry of color and light.

• Klimt's Life and Relationships

Although Klimt never married, he maintained many close personal and artistic relationships throughout his life. One of the most significant was with Emilie Flöge, a successful fashion designer and businesswoman. Their lifelong companionship has fascinated historians, and many believe she was among the most important influences in his personal life.

Klimt also enjoyed strong connections with patrons, fellow artists, and members of Vienna's creative circles. His portraits of society figures became highly sought after, while his artistic vision helped shape the development of modern art in Austria and beyond.

• The Attersee Connection

The village of Unterach sits on the shores of Lake Attersee, a region that became one of Klimt's favorite summer destinations. Surrounded by mountains, forests, and crystal-clear waters, the area offered a peaceful escape from city life and inspired some of his most beloved landscapes.

Unlike his highly decorative portrait paintings, these landscapes allowed Klimt to focus on nature's patterns, colors, and rhythms. The result is a series of works that feel both realistic and dreamlike, celebrating the beauty of the natural world.
