• The Life of Bernadette Soubirous
• Marie-Bernarde "Bernadette" Soubirous was born on 7 January 1844 in Lourdes, France, to a poor family. Frail in health and with limited formal education, she lived a simple life marked by humility and faith.

Despite her modest background, Bernadette became known throughout the world after reporting a series of extraordinary visions in 1858. She later joined the Sisters of Charity in Nevers, where she lived quietly and devoted herself to prayer and service until her death on 16 April 1879 at the age of 35.

• Bernadette was canonized as a saint by the Catholic Church in 1933.
• The Apparitions at Lourdes
• Between 11 February and 16 July 1858, Bernadette reported 18 apparitions of a beautiful lady in a grotto near Lourdes known as Massabielle.

Initially uncertain about the visitor's identity, Bernadette faithfully described the lady as dressed in white with a blue sash and yellow roses on her feet. During one of the later apparitions, the lady identified herself with the words:

• "I am the Immaculate Conception."
• At the time, Bernadette was unfamiliar with the theological significance of this phrase, which many believers considered evidence supporting the authenticity of her account.
• The Spring at Lourdes
• One of the most famous events associated with the apparitions occurred when Bernadette was instructed to dig into the ground at the grotto. A small spring emerged, which gradually grew into a flowing source of water.
• Today, millions of pilgrims visit Lourdes every year, and the spring remains a central part of the sanctuary. Many visitors seek spiritual renewal, prayer, and healing at the site.
• A Memorable Anecdote
• When local officials and townspeople questioned Bernadette about the visions, she remained remarkably consistent despite intense scrutiny. She simply stated:
• "I am charged with telling you, not with making you believe."
• This response has become one of the most enduring examples of her humility and sincerity. Rather than seeking attention or recognition, Bernadette faithfully recounted what she believed she had witnessed.
