About This Puzzle

Girl Reciting the Quran: Osman Hamdi Bey's painting Girl Reciting the Quran (1880) depicts a young woman in an intimate, tranquil moment of study and devotion. Instead of portraying an eroticized "harem" scene typical of Western Orientalist artists, Hamdi Bey emphasizes education and spirituality, offering a more nuanced and respectful view of Ottoman life. Composition and details - The subject: A young girl kneels on a beautiful, intricate oriental carpet, carefully reading from a calligraphed manuscript of the Quran.

• The setting: The scene is set in an interior space that displays many of Hamdi Bey's signature touches, including colorful tiles arranged in a geometric Islamic pattern on the wall and a latticed screen (mashrabiya).

The objects: The Quran rests on a rehal, a traditional X-shaped book rest used for reading holy books, a detail that reinforces the cultural and religious context of the scene. An incense burner (bakhour) is strategically placed in the foreground, another identifier of Muslim culture.

The style: The painting is executed in a realistic style, with meticulous attention to the rich details of the girl's clothing, the textiles, and the architecture. The colors are dominated by earthy tones, with warm browns and soft blues creating a serene and tranquil atmosphere.
