Spiral Into Symmetry

About This Puzzle

• Van Gogh Self-Portrait™ – Symmetrical Spiral Wooden Puzzle

Discover one of the most powerful self-portraits in art history with this stunning puzzle featuring Vincent van Gogh's Self-Portrait (1889). Painted at the Saint-Paul-de-Mausole asylum in Saint-Rémy-de-Provence, France, this work was created during a pivotal period in the artist's life as he recovered from a severe mental health crisis.

Rendered in luminous blues, greens, and warm copper tones, the portrait captures the artist against a mesmerizing background of swirling brushstrokes that seem to pulse with energy. Every line and colour reflects Van Gogh's unmistakable style, creating a work that feels both intensely personal and universally compelling.

• Van Gogh's Life at the Time

Van Gogh painted this self-portrait while staying at the Saint-Rémy asylum, where he had voluntarily admitted himself. Despite periods of illness, he continued to paint and regarded art as essential to his recovery. This portrait is considered one of his last self-portraits and was created during a time when he was working tirelessly while struggling with both physical and emotional challenges.

• The National Gallery of Art describes the painting as having been made while Van Gogh was recovering from a severe breakdown, with the dynamic brushwork and intense colour conveying extraordinary emotional depth.
• What Makes This Artwork Unique

Unlike a traditional likeness, this portrait is a profound study of the artist himself. The swirling patterns in the background echo the movement found in many of Van Gogh's late masterpieces, creating a sense of vitality and motion around the stillness of the figure. Art historians often regard it as one of the finest self-portraits ever painted. [nga.gov],

• The brilliant contrast between the vivid orange beard and the cool blue-green surroundings creates a striking visual effect that continues to captivate viewers more than a century later.
